Sähkö-Jokinen, established in 1968, is the largest manufacturer of impact-safe lighting poles in Europe. From our selection you can also find high-quality concrete foundations for all lighting poles. More than twenty years of experience, innovative product planning and high-quality technology have created the company’s position as a forerunner in the field. Our targets include customer-orientation, competitive prices and faultless deliveries.
KAPU – Durable Choice
KAPU safe pole has been developed to improve the safety of road users. We performed about forty impact tests on our own test track before the official testing in 1994. In fact, we achieved the best results in the official EN 12767. The development and testing of this product took about two years. Many major and challenging lighting projects have been carried out using Sähkö-Jokinen columns and concrete foundations.
Performance under Impact
The high energy absorbing KAPU pole has been approved to the standard EN 12767:2007. Classifications are shown in the table next page and in the EC –certificate on the last page as well. The performance of the KAPU column in crash is based on its ingenious block attachment method and the dimensioning of the structure. When a car crashes into the column its outer casing falls away, effectively absorbing the impact energy. The speed of the vehicle is slowed down in a controlled manner without putting the passengers at risk from the impact. Nor is there any dangerous impact to the roof of the car.
Experiences from the Roads
More than 30 000 KAPU safe poles were installed between 1994 and 2008. Crashes with passively safe lighting columns are investigated regularly by the Finnish Highways Agency and the KAPU safe column has been found to perform very well. The KAPU safe column has been involved in over 400 traffic accidents. In every case the column has functioned extremely well, and no passenger injuries have been reported. After fifteen years of experience, no problems have been identified in the column structures or in the corrosion protection.
Structure
A cone is the optimal shape for the mechanical durability of the column and its appearance. Steel is a well-known material and there is a lot of reliable user experience. Steel is also strong and when galvanized it is long-lasting. The KAPU column is manufactured from high-strength steel and is hot-dip galvanized in accordance with EN ISO 1461. The cross-section of the column is almost round. The body consists of three reinforced sections, which are welded together internally.
Foundation
The KAPU column can be installed using either a conventional method, or into a ready-made SJ concrete foundation. SJ column foundations are fabricated elements equipped with adjustment
or retention screws, and columns in the Nordic countries are generally anchored into these. Ready-made foundation elements can be installed and cabled in advance, leaving the erection of the columns to be the main focus. The potential for later adjustment of the perpendicularity or removal of the column is easy, without the need for excavation.
