Sales and the 'Talent Magnet'

A lot is written about being a ‘Talent Magnet’, either as a company, or as President. It’s all good practice – listen, mentor, reward, provide clear goals and career maps. Good practice for the employer, but what about the employee?

Best application consultancy for the right compaction results

BOMAG GmbH | www.bomag.com

Since the early 1970s the know-how of BOMAG, world market leader in compaction, about compaction technology but also about the scientific state of fundamental knowledge and about engineering aspects and principles has let it to the top of the industry. BOMAG application consultants are present everywhere in the world, where expertise is needed for new projects, regardless whether it is large-scale projects or special problems concerning compaction details. On its new website the company now not only gives an inside view on their consultancy capacities but offers application consultancy and a contact to the respective department.

Greater social mobility and growing traffic volumes are imposing higher loads on our road networks. Roads, rail tracks, airport runways need to be built to withstand increased loads. Today BOMAG is providing new solutions to improve quality on earthworks, highways and civil engineering projects for higher levels of stability and long-term performance of compacted soil and asphalt.

Systematic fundamental investigations in the Research and Development Centre of BOMAG as well as application oriented investigations on large scale construction sites are the essential prerequisites for this progress. Accordingly the company built in 1973 the Research and Development Centre, which even up to now is unique in the world of compaction technology, expanded and supplemented by test areas. Here ideas and products were created year on year, revolutionising compaction and tested under the most severe conditions on the testing grounds.

The aim of soil and asphalt compaction is to provide high load bearing capacity, good stability, low permeability and a good surface finish for a long low-maintenance service life. But every construction site is different and a lot of parameters need to be considered. For the manufacturer at the very beginning of the engineering stands a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of dynamic vibration, the different types of vibration, the exciter systems, the vibrating mass as well as the control of the energy transfer by the centrifugal force, the frequency and amplitude. Secondly the compaction process when using vibratory rollers and the influence of the different material structures and characteristics need to be taken into consideration for each machine designed for a specific application.

Because it is always the ground material that first determines the choice of the right compaction machine. Then it is the moisture content, the thickness of layers, the size of the compaction site, its geographic nature and a lot of things more. Just to give an example: Already for the compaction of soil in earthwork, the basis of all construction projects, the engineering aspects of the different soil groups, the earth engineering classifications, the geotechnical suitability of the soil types as well as their compaction characteristics need to be evaluated. Once the soil properties are examined the quality requirements for the execution have to be considered, e.g. the degree of compaction, the uniformity or evenness. Another important factor is the economical performance and the machine costs and finally the construction site conditions - how spacious is the working area, is it good accessible? Even if all given factors are evaluated and the right machine is chosen still the actual weather conditions need to be considered and the right rolling technique to be applied.

It is this fundamental understanding of the whole compaction process when using vibratory rollers and the interaction between drum vibration and the soil reaction force changing with increasing compaction, that led BOMAG to the development of automatic measuring and recording systems and further on to the launch of intelligent compaction systems such as BOMAG VARIOCONTROL and BOMAG ASPHALT MANAGER. Both are systems which automatically adapt the compaction amplitude to the ground and the actual operating conditions. These controlled rollers particularly stand out in terms of compaction performance, depth effect, uniform compaction and suitability for variable use.

The BOMAG product range includes light equipment such as tampers and vibratory plates, heavy equipment for asphalt and soil, refuse compactors, soil stabilisers, cold milling machines and finishers. For each application there is the right product and a thorough consultancy. The specialist knowledge of BOMAG today helps customers, civil engineering contractors, authorities and consulting engineers in the planning and execution of compaction tasks in earthwork, transportation routes, embankments, foundations of buildings, bridges, sealing layers and landfill site construction.

On its new website the company now not only gives an inside view on their consultancy capacities but offers application consultancy and a contact to the respective department. If you are interested, have a look at: www.bomag.com/application.
